101 Ranch Horse Tips: Techniques for Training the Working Cow Horse

101 Ranch Horse Tips: Techniques for Training the Working Cow Horse

$12.68

A well-trained, responsive, and intelligent working cow horse is more than just a pleasure to ride or watch in action; such an animal is an integral part–a prized employee, if you will–of a ranch’s workforce. How to find and then educate the horse to work cattle in pens and on the range, to negotiate a variety of terrains, and perform all the other tasks it will be asked to do (under a variety of often adverse conditions) is the subject of this handy guide. For example: Being able to open a gate from horseback is a mandatory job for any cowboy. A good place to introduce the young horse to this experience is by using a gate set up as part of an obstacle course. It is desirable and safer if the gate can swing freely and is without any attachments. Start by simply walking your horse through the gate when it’s open. Reaching down and gently swinging the gate as you pass through it is the next step. If your horse is a little spooked by your reaching down, be aware that horses are naturally afraid of tight places. Once your horse can pass through an open gate, then attempt to open a closed gate. Be sure your horse fully understands your hand and leg cues before attempting this step, because he must be able to move off your leg to stand next to the fence, move toward the fence as it swings open to let you pass through, and then move around so you can close it. Written by an experienced rancher and horse trainer, 101 Ranch Horse Tips will show you how to start a young horse or improve an older one with techniques that can apply to performance and enjoyment on or beyond the cattle ranch.

The Horse Training Problem Solver

The Horse Training Problem Solver

$19.91

Training a horse brings an array of vexing challenges. What should a rider do with a horse who just won’t listen? What about the horse who quickly tires, or becomes cranky during training? And there are horses who behave well in the presence of an instructor, but — maddeningly — never while alone with the rider. Situations like these can leave even the most enthusiastic equestrian feeling discouraged, frustrated, and even downright helpless. Jessica Jahiel comes to the rescue with "The Horse Training Problem Solver," the third title in her popular Problem Solver series. In her informal yet informative style, Jahiel offers sensible answers to riders’ most common training challenges. In a handy, accessible Q&A format, Jahiel uses real-life case studies to bring troublesome situations to life and then solves the problems with tested, proven solutions. The book’s combination of basic training theory, effective solutions, and handy tips and strategies will help riders get the most out of every training session. Best of all, Jahiel breaks down training goals — from simple commands like "whoa" and "go" to complex transitions and ring figures — into simple building blocks, logical to both horse and human. Riders will begin to gain their animal’s trust, develop realistic expectations, stay focused, and engage in effective two-way communication, ultimately resulting in a happier, better-trained, more enjoyable horse. For the millions of Americans who show, train, or own horses — including the steady, growing market of first-time horse owners — "The Horse Training Problem Solver" is an indispensable reference. It will demystify horse training, improve the horse-rider relationship, and ensure a more satisfying experience for both horse and rider.

101 Reining Tips: Basics of Training and Showing

101 Reining Tips: Basics of Training and Showing

$11.79

Calling for patterns that incorporate circles, spins, sliding stops, and other moves that come out of ranch work, the sport of reining has grown in popularity until it is now an international event (including its role as one of the United States Equestrian Team disciplines). To help the increasing number of riders who have become involved, 101 Reining Tips provides essential information on all aspects of the sport, from selecting a reining horse prospect and necessary tack and other equipment, to analyzing and practicing all the parts of required and freestyle patterns, up to competing in the show arena. For example: Including maneuvers other than the regular spinning, stopping, and lead changes that make up the reining performance pattern is a good addition to a green rider’s daily regime. This approach spices up the daily ride for both horse and rider. Some suggestions from Stephen Saidik of Cambridge, Ohio, are the counter-canter, side-pass, and two-track. "Offering other exercises to work on besides the main points will help the horse and rider build communication in a way that working only on ‘show’ maneuvers could not," Saidik said. Simple drills can keep the horse alert and help the duo avoid the frustration of a routine rut. During this early learning phase, the most important lesson for the rider is to figure out how the horse responds to "natural" aids of hands, seat, legs, and voice. Simultaneously, the horse will become acclimated to the rider’s style and strength of cues. Maneuvers can be picked up from other disciplines, such as barrel racing or Western horsemanship. The goal is to work different areas of the horse–hip, shoulder, neck, etc.–and create a supplemovement in the horse with soft cues by the rider. When evaluating new moves, check that each one addresses movement and cues before incorporating it into a ride. Using advice from many of the country’s top reiners, here’s a guide that is sure to lead to greater enjoyment and satisfaction–and higher scores.
