Saddles

Saddles

$43.29

Saddles is the first complete work on the subject to appear in print. It is an exhaustive survey, in words and more than eight hundred illustrations, of the one indispensable item of horse equipment, whose history began about the time the horse was domesticated, in the dim mists of unrecorded time. More than history, Saddles also explains the construction of the basic saddle, describes the different saddle types, and explains how they have been altered to meet the changing needs of riders down through the centuries. Those who work with horses for pleasure or profit, from novices looking for suggestions on buying saddles to professionals who want to round out their knowledge, will find this book useful, absorbing, and a delight to the eye. It covers virtually every aspect of saddlery, saddle measurement, selection, and care, plus tips from a knowledgeable horseman on the intricacies of fitting horse, rider, and saddle into a dynamic whole. The aesthetics of the craft are also presented in detail: the uniquely American leatherwork of the show saddle, the elaborate use of silver (now undergoing a revival), the adoption by American saddlemakers of useful accessories from other lands (the tapadero from Mexico, for example). The construction of the saddle is described and illustrated in careful detail, along with descriptions of the many accessories of early and modern times. The section on famous saddles shows now-priceless gem-studded examples of the saddlemaker’s skill. The first compilation of American saddlemakers is given in the appendix. A glossary of saddle terms and a thoroughly researched bibliography conclude the book. In undertaking the enormous task of compiling this work, one of the author’s underlying purposes has been to enhance interest in the few surviving old saddles as collectors’ items and as artifacts of American history. For, as he says, "Much of that history was made on horseback."

Blazing Saddles

Blazing Saddles

$4.69

Rated: NASynopsis: The face of movie comedy was changed forever by Mel Brooks’s raucous but affectionate spoof of old-fashioned Hollywood westerns, and for that reason alone Blazing Saddles belongs in every DVD home library. Writer-director Brooks not only lampooned the hoariest horse opera clichés in this 1974 romp, he also challenged the self-censorial political correctness then just beginning to creep into Hollywood films. The justifiably notorious campfire scene, which some critics decried as unnecessarily coarse and vulgar, heralded a veritable flood of movie gags involving bodily functions. By today’s standards, the flatulent frontiersmen seem pretty tame. But after 30 years, what still startles is the frequent and all-too-casual use of the n-word to describe Cleavon Little’s character, the former railroad worker appointed as sheriff of Rock Ridge, a town beset by rustlers and bad guys working for a corrupt government official (Harvey Korman). Racial slurs aside, the laughs come fast and furious as the sheriff combats range ruffians with the aid of a drunken gunfighter (Gene Wilder, stealing nearly every scene he’s in) and a leggy femme fatale (Madeline Kahn, in a hilarious takeoff on the saloon girl played by Marlene Dietrich in Destry Rides Again). Blazing Saddles and its successor, the Brooks-directed Young Frankenstein, forever changed the way Hollywood looked at itself. These no-holds-barred comedies, with their sophomoric innuendoes and self-referential excesses, remain templates for filmmakers who specialize in parody. Blazing Saddles, the first and more daring of the two, still has the power to raise eyebrows and drop jaws, three decades after its big-screen debut. Based on what has followed in its wake, that’s pretty amazing. Vulgar, crude, and occasionally scandalous in its racial humor, this hilarious bad-taste spoof of Westerns, co-written by Richard Pryor, features Cleavon Little as the first black sheriff of a stunned town scheduled for demolition by an encroaching railroad. Little and co-star Gene Wilder have great chemistry, and the delightful supporting cast includes Harvey Korman, Slim Pickens, and Madeline Kahn as a chanteuse modelled on Marlene Dietrich. As in Young Frankenstein (1974), Silent Movie (1976), and High Anxiety (1977), director/writer Mel Brooks gives a burlesque spin to a classic Hollywood movie genre; in his own manic, Borscht Belt way, Brooks was a central player in revising classic genres in light of Seventies values and attitudes, an effort most often associated with such directors as Robert Altman and Peter Bogdanovich . Some of this film’s sequences, notably a gaseous bean dinner around a campfire, have become comedy classics. Saddles & Silks: A Jockey’s Story

$20.64

Rated: NASynopsis: The Fortitude for Failure, The Passion for Victory – Crouched for action atop powerful Thoroughbreds, jockeys race their mounts around the track to the roar of cheering spectators. In a sport where only one winning horse and rider will cross the finish line, there is enormous drama and jubilation in that achievement. Remarkably, most jockeys will never experience it. For every Willie Shoemaker, there are hundreds of unknown jockeys who risk life and limb, swallow their losses and compete for mounts every day. From the demanding labors of love behind the track to the glory of the Winner’s Circle, this is a rare window into the world of the dedicated – and dangerous – life of the Thoroughbred race jockey. approx. 70 mins. DVD Features: Photo Gallery / Horse Photography / Jockey Profiles / Bonus Disc THE THOROUGHBRED – A MAGIC WAY OF GOING Hosted by David Suzuki, this award-winning program from the highly respected The Nature of Things series explores the evolution of the Thoroughbred. While mankind has enhanced the awesome power and natural beauty of this noble creature through centuries of scrutiny and selective breeding, the experts still can add no certainty to judging a Thoroughbred’s potential. approx. 53 mins.
